Ed Mergele, Ph.D.

Ed Mergele has lived in Kendall County, Texas for over 50 years. He was born in New Braunfels, Texas, where he attended public school. He then attended high school in New Braunfels, and Texas Military Institute in San Antonio, Texas in the late 1930s & early 1940’s. He graduated from Blinn College in Brenham, Texas after serving three years of Navy/CG combat duty in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans during World War II. He majored in History at the University of Texas at Austin, and was a staff writer for the first Handbook of Texas at UT. Ed is a sixth generation Texan, and retired from the general construction and real estate business. He is a published author of many military and southwest historical books, newspaper articles, and short stories. After retiring he earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree in History. He met his wife of over sixty-five years at UT Austin. They married when he was recalled to the U. S. Navy for the Korean War. They have four children, twelve grandchildren, and several great grand children. Ed and his wife Mary Lou (Proctor) are both descendants of Republic of Texas and British Colonial America immigrants and pioneers.
